I know why you haven't started your book yet

Jan 14, 2020

I talk to writers each week who have amazing backgrounds and experiences. I have brainstorming sessions with people who are pioneering new disciplines, people who have overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, and researchers who are contributing new ideas and lost knowledge in their fields of study…

…and all of them are excited to share their information and life-changing solutions with others by writing and publishing their own books.

Yet, most often, these people never even start writing their books!

 Why?

“There are too many books on this topic already.”

“I don’t want to pile on to a popular genre and get lost in the mix.”

“I need more focus and clarity – I have too many ideas!”

Should I have more life experiences before taking something like this on?”

“Lots of my colleagues have written books — No one reads them.”

“It costs too much to self-publish.”

“I don’t know where to start.”

Yadda, yadda, yadda….

Listen up people: Published authors are not magical unicorns! They are people just like you and me who have something to contribute to the public dialogue.

There’s an old Zimbabwe expression that says, “If you can walk you can dance, and if you can talk you can sing.”

I say if you are speaking, teaching, or blogging…you can write a book!

You see, no one writes and publishes a book on his or her own—every book is a collaborative effort. Editors, designers, printers—and sometimes marketing professionals and consulting specialists—all play a role in producing books and getting them to market. You are not alone!

What I have learned by starting and operating two businesses, writing two books, and practicing art, is that the most important step in starting anything new is to make a firm commitment, and then figure it out!

Lose this day loitering—’twill be the same story
To-morrow–and the next more dilatory;
Then indecision brings its own delays,
And days are lost lamenting o’er lost days.
Are you in earnest? seize this very minute–
What you can do, or dream you can, begin it,
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it,
Only engage, and then the mind grows heated—
Begin it, and the work will be completed!
(Quote attributed to various, most notably Goethe)

I do understand that busy professionals have to time their projects to fit in with their previous commitments and lifestyles. That’s important.

But I hope you’ll make the commitment to start your book.

Once you commit and begin, you’ll be delighted at the power and magic that your decision will draw to you. When it's a YES, nothing can stop you.

Plan for Success,

Lindsay
